Great Book For You

Recently I’ve been diving into a great book…

“The Practice Of Christian Religious Perfection” by Alphonsus Rodriguez.
It’s all about how to live a perfect
virtuous Christian life.
I highly recommend it.

The other day, I came across a passage by St. Bernard that was quite profound…

And shared it with my students in my private King app (details on that later).

Here’s what he said…
"No one becomes perfect on a sudden, it is by mounting, and not by flying, that we come to the top of the ladder.

Let us therefore ascend, and let meditation and prayer be the two feet we make use of to do so. For meditation lets us see our wants; and prayer obtains for us relief from God.

The one shows us the way, and the other leads to him; and, in fine, meditation makes us clearly discern the dangers that surround us, and prayer makes us happily avoid and escape them.”
Wow!
Powerful stuff, huh?

As St. Bernard asserts…

It is by “mounting” not “flying” that we reach the top of the ladder.
How often do we find ourselves just wishing for great things to happen to us…

Not willing to put in the work to make our dreams a reality?

Some food for thought.

Also, he goes on to say that we need two things…
Meditation and Prayer.
Meditation allows us to see the deepest truest parts
of our hearts desires…

And prayer gives us the opportunity to ask God
to make them a reality.
But…

We must recognize that not all that we pray for will be manifested.

It’s not as simple as making a wish, expecting it to come true.

Why not?

Because God doesn’t work like that.

He has a plan for each one of us that is far beyond what our minds can imagine…

And so I find it helpful when praying to ask this…
“If it be your will, Lord let it come easily
to me… But if not, take it away.”
I invite you to pray the same way.

Anyway, I thought that you might find this passage beneficial… and felt inclined to share it with you today.

Hopefully you can take something away from it.
