I Got TRIGGERED

Yesterday I got an email from a subscriber who disagreed with something I said....

And I hastily responded with an angry reply.

I was triggered.

After hitting send I immediately regretted it. Not because of how I responded, but because I knew I was coming from a place of anger.

Last week at the Catholic men's retreat Father Ripperger gave a long talk about the critical importance of "emotional detachment" for masculine excellence.
He said that when we get triggered by someone or something it is a sign that we are being ruled by "antecedent emotions".

Basically, there is an unconscious movement in the body that sets off a domino effect of thoughts, feelings and actions. And if we are not paying attention, our entire lives can be misguided by these antecedent emotions.
The way to gain control over them, he says...
To notice the initial reaction, the unconscious movement in the body.
Consciously choose our next move by replacing any negative thought, reactions justification or excuse with self denial and charity.
In other words, tell your inner bitch to shut up and then steer it towards something more profitable and resourceful towards the Kingdom of God.

Honestly, this advice doesn't sound too different from what I learned in my study of neurobiology back in 2014.
Anyway, it was a great reminder that:

a) I still struggle with unresourceful antecedent emotions.

b) I don't have to be a slave to it, according to His word and the glory of science.
I guess in a way masculine initiation, or dying to the "old man" and putting on "the new man", is an on going process that requires discipline, diligence and a never ending commitment to holiness.

I hope this message helpful to ya.
